REGENERATIVE, SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES
Our family is passionate about the health of our environment, customers and animals. We strive to be a model for sustainable, regenerative, and humane farming that produces the healthiest, most nutritious products in the market. Through our efforts, we are proud to be reducing our carbon footprint and restoring the fertility of our soils.
5 Generations of Ranching
We are a family owned and operated business in Johnson City, Kansas. We are proud to be 5th generation ranchers, raising cattle, chickens and farming land that was settled in 1885 by Matt’s great-great-grandfather Henry Bearman. Henry took a train from Cincinnati, then walked 25 miles south to where we are now. He quickly learned that eastern farming methods would not work in the western region and began experimenting with rice, corn, sorghum, kaffir, and maize. Henry eventually found success in the cattle industry, growing his herd to 800 head of horses and cattle.
A Sustainable, Regenerative, Humane Approach
Today, Wholly Cow continues the Bearman legacy with a passion for sustainable, humane farming practices. We believe it is important to usher our ranch into the twenty first century with modern, sustainable, and humane ranching practices. We began our journey with the conviction that there has to be a better way of farming than the conventional methods used by most farms today. In 2005, we decided to take a leap of faith and switch to a no-till method of regenerative farming. This was a dramatic change from traditional farming practices, as it required us to give up many of the traditional farming techniques, such as tilling and plowing, and embrace a more natural approach to agriculture.
Why Grass-fed and Finished?
We’re committed to providing fully grass-fed and finished beef for three main reasons.
- Soil Health - Grazing cattle (and other livestock) on open pasture is one of the best things we can do for the environment. The health of our land is very important to us. We want to give back to the land. Grazing livestock improves the microbes and is healthier for the crops. It helps conserve water and puts nutrients back into the soil without using synthetic fertilizers.
- Consumer Health - We want to be able to provide a healthy source of protein for our customers. Carotenoids from grass-fed beef fat are much richer. Very high in Omegas. Grass-fed beef has anti-inflammatory properties. We’ve had people come to us who are on chemo, who have said their oncologist told them to seek out fully grass-fed and finished beef for their diet.
- Animal Health - Letting our animals graze on open pastures is also much healthier for the animals.
It's a win/win/win!
